The control measures imposed by the EU are compulsory for all participants of the agri-food chain. EU regulations establish some common rules for the management of the production processes and trading, defining the requirements of the control system for each member state.
Each country has to appoint a public authority who applies the regulations and controls them. In Italy the appointed authority is MiPaf (Minister of agricultural policy) who in turns appointed 16 certification bodies in compliance with UNI EN 45011 and other national regulations.

Producers exporting to the US must be certified according to NOP regulations which have the following brand:

Some voluntary certifications exist like:
-ICEAI-FOAM ACCREDITED: brand highly appreciated by commercial distribution nets, which focuses on ethical and social requirements;
-ICEA- BIOLOGICO DI FATTORIA: for Italian products entirely manufactured inside a sole farm;
- Agriturismi Bio-ecologici- AIAB: for Italian farmers engaged also in eco-sustainable tourism, according to the Italian Association of Organic Farming (AIAB);
- Biosuisse (for Switzerland)
- Naturland (for Germany)
- Soil Association (for UK)
