Many of the above mentioned organic raw materials are usually for feed use. The other are for food use as raw materials for food industries. In the USA 70% of cereals cultivations is for feed use. By 2030 this percentage is estimated to increase at least of 50% in order to sustain consumption of emerging countries. These are worrying estimates considering that in conventional farming chemical fertilizers and herbicides are used. Furthermore, intensive breeding reduces biodiversity and combining with erosion of the soil, the greenhouse effect, contamination of water and soil, acid rains caused by emission of ammonia have a devastating effect on the environment.
According to FAO, the livestock is responsible for 18% of global emissions of gas carbon. For this reason, the state of Belgium in the city of Gand officially dedicates a day per week to vegetarian food.
In order to safeguard the environment and health, we should limit the consumption of meat and possibly eat meat coming from organic farming. According to the organic farming principles, parasites, diseases and infesting grass are treated with natural and not polluting methods, admitted by the EU Reg. Furthermore, the best soil conditions are developed combined with varieties naturally resistant to parasites and diseases; natural predators are favoured along with an efficient programme of crop rotations.
